November Gathering - Recoil Games pulled a full house, again!

Despite the icy and windy weather, 243 brave game industry professionals made it to the System Rock on 13th November. 243! Thanks to everyone who attended - we clearly beat the previous record of 210 attendees set in November 2006 (which by the way was also a Recoil-sponsored event). dsc01499-1.jpgdsc01518-7.jpgdsc01544-11.jpg

Finnish game development scene was well represented from Recoil, Bugbear and Sumea to RedLynx, Ironstar Helsinki and others. Also several IT-professional joined the party to marvel at active discussion amongst game developers. IGDA Finland was happy to welcome 48 newcomers to the party as well as people all the way from Spain, Digital Chocolate's game studio Microjocs and a bit closer to home, from Tampere TTVO!

November Gathering was sponsored by Recoil Games. People enjoyed never-before-seeing Earth No More concept art while having sponsored beers and snacks. According to Recoil Games the game is supposed to “fuse together genre-pushing emotional drama and a disaster setting with global ramifications”. The game is being developed for several platforms and will be out in 2009. Despite the huge crowd, IGDA volunteers did a great job and ensured a super-smooth night!

Naturally most of the discussion dwelled around Recoil and Earth No More. In addition, Northern Game Conference held a week earlier in Oulu was commented. Common opinion seemed to be that the presentations were good but hiking and drinking at the dark snowy forest was an experience for many. Renewed Igda.fi got good feedback, too. We urge you all to continue the igda.fi website related discussion at the Forum. All of your comments are highly valued!

We hope to see you all again at the Little Christmas party on December 11th!

November Gathering - Tuesday 13th

Greetings! It's that funky time of the month again! This time we will be packing the house full again with he help of Recoil Games sponsoring drink tickets and snacks for the first ones to arrive. Recoil Games will be presenting some concept art in the gathering from their upcoming next-gen action-adventure game "Earth No More"! Enough said, see you there! Remember, doors open at 19.00 sharp!

Recoil Games was established a year ago and since then we have come a long way. The development of "Earth No More" - a next-gen original IP action-adventure game - together with 3D Realms Entertainment has proceeded extremely well. We thought this would be a perfect time for us to show our friends in the Finnish games industry what we have been up to. But don't expect to see screenshots; we're not there yet :)

October Gathering Turned Into a Relaxed Evening With Boardgames

The cold fall weather took it's toll on Octobers IGDA gathering attendance. Even with industry representatives from Tampere, the attendance rose to 99, just shy of a hundred. B 'n W love

Most notable at the gathering were the new decorations on the wall. System Rock had gone through a small facelift, which was well received by attendees. While attendance was lower than usual, those who showed up had the rare luxury of free tables. This luxury was quickly exploited and various boardgame sessions sprung up around the room, amongst them Munchin and Scrabble. A person with a brand-new iPhone got a lot of new friends as everyone wanted to try the device out.

Overall, evening was held in very relaxed atmosphere and the extra space and less background noise meant there were more meaningful discussions and mingling among the crowd was than on the more populated gatherings.

September Gathering was a solid success & Presentation drew in a full auditorium!

This time IGDA Finland gathering started differently because the evening begun with "IGDA Finland Presentations" at Pääposti Auditorium. The theme of the first ever session was money. We were positively surprised of the plentiful and versatile audience. There were a little over 60 persons present from students to business developers and game designers. It was also good to notice how the "IGDA Finland Presentations" attracted people who have never been at the pub nights but found "Presentations" a comfortable way to join the gathering. Some practicalities were still looking for their place but otherwise things went well. The speakers at the first session were Erik Robertson from Nordic Game Program, Ilari Kuittinen from Housemarque and Timo Vuorensola from Energia Productions.

Erik Robertson reminded people to apply funds from Nordic Game Program. The deadline for the applications is 15th October. Erik also presented funded projects from previous rounds and reminded that one company can send more than one application but only one project per company can be funded. The applications should not be “too professional” and definitely no sequels. More information HERE.

The second speaker was Ilari Kuittinen who is the CEO of Housemarque and chairman of Finnish Game Developers Association. Ilari talked about downloadable console games. Housemarque’s first PS3 title Super Stardust HD came out in June this year and has been one of the most successful PS3 downloadable titles within the last months. In his talk, Ilari focused on future trends of the market. He admitted that casual games trend is reflecting to the downloadable console market as well and believed downloadable console games will be a huge market in the future.

Currently Bejeweled and Zuma are the best-seller casual games. There are a lot of fuzz going on around casual games. For example EA just founded a new division for casual games development. What comes to the “killer titles” for downloadable console market Ilari sees that the hard core of downloadable console games is not casual games. Currently Super Stardust and Warhawk are closest to the core. Ilari also mentioned that Housemarque is working on their new project for Xbox Live. The game will come out in 2008.

Timo Vuorensola directed popular sci-fi comedy Star Wrek a few years back. Now Energia Productions is doing their second movie titled Iron Sky. Finlandia awarded sci-fi author Johanna Sinisalo is doing the script for the movie. Energia Production would also like to make Iron Sky game or even several games but they have no clue how to do it. So he talked about their production in development and asked for help from game developers. If all goes well, they would like to make three games: one before the movie comes out, one at the same time and one after. Johanna Sinisalo would do the script for the game but all other details are not clear. Timo asked game developers to help Iron Sky team! How to make a game, how much would it cost, how long time would it take, what platforms… All help is highly appreciated and should be channeled to Timo.

After IGDA Finland Presentations it was pub night as usual. 124 enthusiasts attended casual beer & hang around at the System Rock. All "IGDA Finland Presentations" speakers joined the pub night, stayed late and hopefully got new perspectives and ideas for their work! It was also very nice to see that the number of girls is on the rise. We had fun – hope to see you again next time!
